5 Ways to Stay Safe Online

The internet can be a tricky place. For every legitimate business and honest vendor online, there’s a hundred scam artists and hackers looking for an easy target. If you’re going to be using the internet on a regular basis, you also need to know how to protect yourself online.

Maintain Your Privacy

It’s easy to share personal information online – but how much you share, and who you share it with, should always be carefully monitored. Especially important is knowing how to keep your personal information private unless you want it shared. Before giving out your street address or phone number, remember that information tends to spread online, and in many cases there’s no taking back something you’ve posted.

Check your privacy settings on all of your accounts, and make sure you’re taking proper control of your information. You have a right to protect your privacy online, but it’s up to you to enable the available safeguards many sites provide.

Browse Safely

It’s important to know how to avoid the ‘shadier’ and more dangerous websites online. Malicious scammers and cyber-criminals often use the allure of tempting content to bait people into clicking dangerous links or downloading viruses hidden within other software. Avoid shady links or offers that seem too good to be true – they probably are!

Additionally, make sure you know your internet connection is secure. If it is not, or you’re uncertain as to the connection’s security (for example, if you’re using a public Wi-Fi connection), then avoid providing any personal information that could be stolen.

Think Before You Post

As mentioned before, there aren’t really any take-backs when it comes to information posted online. Content shared over the internet, be it images, text, video – it has a way of staying forever. Simply deleting that tweet you made insulting your boss when you lost your temper doesn’t mean it’s gone, or that no one will ever see it. It’s a simple matter for users to copy and save anything posted online, so if you think you might regret it later, don’t post it!

Keep Your Passwords Strong

A strong, unique password is sometimes all that stands between a hacker and your most valuable information. If you use a single password across all of your accounts, then a single breach on one of those sites compromises all of your online accounts!

The best and easiest way to keep your passwords varied and strong is to use a password manager – add-ons that help create and store secure passwords for your online accounts. It makes logging into your accounts take one more step than before, but it’s a small price to pay for added security across all your online accounts!

Maintain Your Firewall and Antivirus Programs

For many of us modern-day internet browsers, it’s easy to fall into a mindset that maintaining these programs is more hassle than they’re worth – it’s not true! While making allowances for programs through your firewall or running weekly sweeps of your hard drive using an antivirus program might seem like a pain in the neck, it’s worth it to avoid the risk of malware finding its way onto your computer or hackers gaining access to your desktop!

In the world of today, internet usage is becoming more and more of a societal requirement. Much of what we do is done online. This is especially true for the business world, where online savvy is often expected, especially from up-and-coming professionals. Keep yourself safe online, and you’re free to enjoy everything the web has to offer!
