One of the main goals of the employee orientation process is to make each new employee feel welcome and comfortable in their new workplace. Starting a new job is a nerve-wracking experience – everything is brand new and there’s so much to learn and do. However, there are things management can do before, during, and after the employee orientation program to minimize nerves and help each new employee feel like part of the team.

Here are just a few ways you can make new employees feel welcome.

#1 Create a Schedule

A schedule will tell the new employees what to expect and when. It will guide them through their first few days on the job. For example, detailing the time of any orientation meetings or office tours will help the new employee prepare for what’s to come.

#2 Introduce New Employees to Other Workers

Another simple way to ease the transition process is to introduce the new employees to others in the office. Even knowing just one person will make things easier – but, if time allows, try to introduce the new hire to as many people as possible. Depending on how often you hire new employees, a 15-minute meet and greet is an excellent way to break the ice, meet co-workers, learn about the organization.

#3 Give an Office Tour

Showcasing the entire office is another way to help new employees get the lay of the land. Giving a tour of the office will reduce the new hire’s anxiety –make sure to visit the break room, restrooms, co-workers’ offices, the supply room, and other areas they’ll need to find. Along the same lines, making sure the new employee’s office is set up and stocked with supplies in advance will avoid additional downtime and make him or her feel comfortable right away.

#4 Provide a Mentor

Developing a mentorship program is another way to help new hires learn their jobs and grow on a professional and personal level. A mentor can be available to answer questions and provide guidance during the first few weeks of employment, and beyond if both parties want to continue the relationship. Mentors are a valuable source of knowledge that can help new employees get up to speed quicker and avoid making common mistakes.

#5 Invite Them to Lunch

One of the best ways to get to know a new employee better is by simply inviting them to lunch. Talking to new employees out of the office, in a more casual environment, is a great way to learn more about them and can help them feel more comfortable around you when you get back in the office. These lunch dates are opportunities to build relationships and make the transition as painless as possible – and maybe even make it fun.

Understanding how to make new employees feel welcome is critical to the long-term success of your business. Practicing these tips can create a smoother transition for everyone and play a crucial role in the development of a new employee. Of course, in addition to all this, management being available for questions and feedback can minimize initial stress and set up new employees for a bright future at your company.
