Many terms can be used to describe online training. Terms such as web based training (WBT), computer based training (CBT), e-learning, distance learning, and cyber training all refer to this type of training. This method is an effective way of conducting training by use of electronic mediums, and eliminates the need for an immediate human instructor. Online training takes advantage of technology to impart knowledge in an efficient and flexible manner.
An organization is able to come up with an online training course that can be used as standard company training. This way, the organization is able to merge training and education for all its employees across time and geographical constraints. Training modules are delivered to employees in different offices at once and this eliminates the need for employees to travel and attend training which may interrupt their work schedules.
One of the most important aspects of online training courses is flexibility. Busy employees in the organization are able to take the training courses at their most suitable time. Many employees also find online training to be easier to undertake than instructor led training. Online training is self paced and usually incorporates interactive questionnaires, tutorials, self assessment, case studies, and extra features that help each individual to digest the information easily. It helps employees to learn in a stress free environment as they are able to manage their own training experience.
Another great aspect of an online training course is that it offers self paced training as well as uniformity in training at once. The course is the same for each employee, yet each one of them still has the opportunity to tailor the instructions to themselves. Whereas a human instructor is available for a limited period of time, online training materials can be accessed anytime and anywhere as long the the individual has an electronic medium and internet connection. If the individual happens to have any questions regarding the training course, support is available through phone, e-mail, or live chat options.
Online learning doesn’t require the organization to invest in any extra equipment as the training is conducted through the company’s own server and delivered via the internet. The company would also be able to supply computers for the individuals to use, since the courses could be accessed from any terminal.
Using online training does not solely make training effective. For training to be effective, the company must make sure that the training is interactive, engaging, and not messy. The training course should be streamlined together with its interface. While the organization can include testing modules, interactive simulations, audio and video instructions and other features, it should aim to add features that deliver more substance to the course to make the learning experience enjoyable for the employees.
It is important for a company to remember that if the way the information is portrayed is not supplementing the learning of a specific topic, then the online training may turn out to be ineffective. The extra features incorporated to the training course must complement the major topic of the course and add to the knowledge of the employees. The company should ensure that the control buttons, navigation graphics and the learning interface are easy for the employees to understand and use.
When online training is planned and carried out systematically, it can be very beneficial for an organization and can help in minimizing costs. Online learning is very effective and can form a major part of an organization’s training environment.
