Here’s something most of us can agree on: teamwork is essential in the workplace. Among other things, teamwork can boost productivity and create a better work environment for everyone. But that doesn’t mean that working together as a team happens naturally. In many cases, managers have to encourage everyone to work together to reap the rewards of a collaborative effort.

Here are a few ways managers can bring everyone together to maximize teamwork performance.

Build a Community

One of the best ways to improve teamwork in the workplace is to focus on building a community that shares common goals and objectives. Enabling employees to feel empowered and invested in their work is a great way to increase interaction with co-workers and make each employee feel like part of the team.

Choose an Effective Leader

It’s easy to rally behind a great leader. The best leaders effortlessly motivate employees and work with them to reach their full potential. Not everyone is meant to be a leader so it may take time to find the right person for this role, the one who can seamlessly navigate the workplace culture, motivate others, and promote teamwork all at the same time.

Don’t Let Conflict Linger

Conflict is one of the most common obstacles to cohesive teamwork. This is true whether you’re in the office or on the playing field. Rather than letting conflict linger over an extended period of time, disagreements should be nipped in the bud as soon as possible – before they turn into full-blown arguments. One way to deal with these situations is for the leader to meet with the employees involved to encourage resolution and prevent escalation. As we already mentioned, this is an instance when it’s important to have the right leader in place – one who can mediate or solve conflict and help employees re-focus on the task at hand without getting distracted or bogged down by minor issues.

Always Maintain Accountability

Accountability is important, right from day one. For example, if an employee misses his deadline, he or she should be held accountable by the rest of the team. A missed deadline affects everyone and can delay the entire project so every employee should know that they’ll have to answer for why something did or did not get completed. When each team member is aware of their role in the bigger picture, and understands how poor performance can impact everyone else, respect levels tend to increase because everyone knows their value and the value of their teammates.

Encourage Feedback

Never underestimate the power of feedback, whether it’s from a manager or a team member. Effective feedback, both positive and negative, is very helpful and can be used to make important decisions and improvements. Top performers want feedback from their peers and know it’s most helpful when it calls out strengths and weaknesses.

These tips will encourage employee interaction, strengthen teamwork, and make your team more productive. If your goal is to build a successful team, you should focus on that from day one. Creating strong teams doesn’t happen overnight – but it can be done. Like anything else, when you invest in your employees you’ll see the results.
