Today’s economic landscape is one that is rapidly shifting thanks to major changes, especially when it comes to technology. Changes in tech have allowed to work harder, smarter, and more efficiently. One thing our modern technology allows for, depending on your job, is to work from home. So many of our businesses run online and share documents and information entirely through the web. All of this makes working from home, not only possible, but very convenient and easy. With the COVID-19 pandemic gripping the globe, more and more businesses are considering working from home solutions for the both the short and long term. Let’s learn how to make the most of working from home and maintain your effectiveness.
For some people, working from home sounds like heaven. No commute, sleeping in, working in pajamas, all of this seems wonderful to them, and it can be. However, others may find the distractions of the home environment make focusing on working difficult. This can often be the case, but with a few tricks in your pocket, you can find ways of staying as focused as possible even from home.
One of the most important things you can do is to create a designated work space. If you don’t have an at home office then finding a corner of your table or family room that can be “your workspace” is greatly helpful in putting you in that “work mode” state of mind.
For many of us, our habits and routine before work help get our body ready for a full day at our jobs. Without our morning routine and commute our bodies can have trouble adjusting to this different routine. This can make us less energetic and focused during our work from home hours.
In general, one of the best things you can do is to structure and treat your day the same as if it’s any other normal work day.
There are no doubts about it, while at home there are simply going to be more distractions. Family, pets, and things like the television can all pull your attention. If at all possible, work in a room with as few distractions as possible. Don’t do things differently from work if possible. If you wouldn’t work at the office with a TV on in the background then don’t do it from home.
It’s also easy to slack off at home. We don’t have supervisors and coworkers to hold us accountable and keep us focused. Making a list of your intended goals each day can help you hold yourself accountable to what you need to get done.
If you’re used to working in a collaborative office, then going to a work from home model can be somewhat jarring. Not being able to pop over to a coworkers desk to ask questions or get advice can slow things down.
If you and your office are transitioning to a work from home model, then make sure that you all have ways to keep in touch. Chat messaging apps or daily conference calls can all help keep the team on the same page and aligned in their goals. With these tips, and the right attitude, you can make the most of your work from home and be as productive as if you were at work.
