A big and unexpected change can come into your life at any moment, possibly bringing along a major disruption to your normal routine. Good or bad, a change can add quite a bit of uncertainty. If you find yourself easily overwhelmed in the face of change, keep reading on to find new ways to conquer those smothering feelings.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can be easy to isolate yourself and stop communicating with your friends, family, or coworkers. While time to yourself can be very beneficial, too much of it can be bad. Stick with a routine that gives you time to yourself but also gets you out with other people (it could be something as minor as grocery shopping!). Interacting with other people, even if it’s just for a couple of minutes, can greatly benefit your mental and physical health.

Vent a little bit too! By confiding in someone you trust, you are able to voice your concerns and frustrations. They may provide some insight on the problem you’re facing too. Just don’t go overboard with venting – too much can be harmful.

Ask Questions

If you’re confused about something, ask about it! Never feel bad about asking a question. It’s better to have asked a question than to make an error that could potentially cause more problems. Preparing yourself to the best of your ability is one of the best things you can do when an unexpected change occurs.

One Step at a Time

If the change you’re facing requires you to do a lot, just take it one step at a time. Write down all the steps that are part of this change. This will make it easier to get through each step. It will also help you visualize everything that needs to be done and make it seem much less overwhelming; it will make it more feasible to complete. Once you finish one of the steps, cross it off, put a checkmark next to it, give it a page in your bullet journal! Whatever you do, make completing your goals satisfying. If you take it one step at a time, it will be finished before you know it!

Don’t Stress Over the What-If’s

It’s okay to not have certainty or full control. We can’t predict the future, so the best we can do is prepare. Ask yourself the “what if” questions. If you prepare for certain circumstances, and a problem arises, you will already have a game-plan to address it. Don’t ignore them, but don’t stress over them either! If you’re able to stay optimistic even in the worst situations, then you’ll be able to power through anything.

Remember: sometimes change is necessary, other times it’s inevitable. Prepare yourself even if you don’t approve of the change; why make something harder on yourself than it’s already going to be? Accept this, and you’ll find facing new changes will become easier and easier each time.
