Say you take public transportation to work every day. Whether it’s the bus, train, or subway, you probably don’t give a second thought to the driver’s qualifications, right? You, like everyone else on board, probably just assumes that he or she has been properly trained and that you’re as safe as you can reasonably expect to be.

Now think about your job—have you been properly trained? Are you taking the time and spending the money to properly train the employees you manage? Many companies are hesitant to invest in training and turn a blind eye to the simple fact that not training employees also comes at a cost. Despite arguments to the contrary, the benefits of employee training and development outweigh the cost and time commitments, and are good, not just for the individual employees but for the company as a whole.

It’s mandated by law

A number of jobs require by law that employees have specific training and qualifications. For example, direct support professionals in the District of Columbia must complete certain training prior to working independently with people who receive supports. From that point on, staff must participate in ongoing and enhanced professional development training as specified in the regulations. This is true of many service-oriented and health-care-related jobs to ensure that employees have the right skills to operate effectively and legally.

Safety first

Responsible employers do everything possible to avoid job-related injuries by taking the time and using the appropriate company resources to make sure that all employees, and everyone served by the company, are safe. The right training ensures that your employees are using the right equipment, using that equipment correctly, and following correct health and safety practices.

Improved performance

It’s a simple fact: An employee who receives proper training is better able to perform his or her job. The right training gives employees the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their work to the best of their ability, which will increase productivity and the overall quality of work. Furthermore, when employees feel appreciated and empowered, they tend to be more willing to work harder, perform better, and do whatever needs to be done to get the job done right.

Increased production

Employee training is one of the simplest ways to increase productivity in the workplace. With training comes new knowledge and skill, which means employees can take on extra responsibilities as needed. On the other hand, untrained workers tend to produce work of less value and quality (and it takes them more time).

Employee satisfaction

Untrained employees often turn into unhappy employees. Employees who go through training and development tend to stay in their jobs for longer periods of time and produce better results. By making an investment in training, you’re telling your employees that they are valued—and employees who feel appreciated and challenged tend to be more satisfied in their jobs. Employees who feel unsupported by upper management are more likely to be are unhappy, which will lead to mistakes and underperformance.

Satisfied customers

While everything before this point has been important, this might be the main takeaway: Highly skilled employees deliver higher levels of customer satisfaction. And happy customers will remain customers. The opposite, however, is true of untrained employees: They may mishandle situations or make mistakes that lead to unhappy customers or, worse, lost business.

To recap, when you take the time to train your employees they are encouraged to continuously learn new skills which will: 1. meet state or federal requirements; 2. ensure safety; 3. improve performance and reduce mistakes; 4. increase production; 5. create a better work environment and keep employees happy; and 6. increase customer satisfaction. Remember, when you invest in your employees’ development, you’re investing in your company.
