Each step of the new employee onboarding process is important, from the moment they accept the job through the entire first year. Important as the process is, it’s not uncommon for steps to be missed along the way. With that in mind, and with the goal of helping you create a welcoming atmosphere, we’ve designed a checklists that provides a step-by-step guide to make the first few days on the job easier for everyone.

What to Do Before the New Employee’s First Day:

  • Notify everyone in your department that a new person is starting/person’s position

  • Schedule the person’s New Employee Orientation (send out welcome packet with log-in info if orientation is offered online)

  • Set up an email account

  • Set up employee’s workstation (desk, computer, phone, office supplies)

  • Schedule necessary training

What To Include In The Employee Orientation Program:

  • New employee paperwork

  • Review job description, outline duties and expectations

  • Describe how employee’s job fits in the department, and how the job and department contribute to the entire company

  • Cover company culture, mission, and values

  • Review policies (anti-harassment, work hours, dress code, breaks and lunch, overtime, use of vacation and sick time, holidays, etc.)

  • Review benefit options

  • Provide list of contact names and information, facility map, parking information, employee handbook

On The Employee’s First Day:

  • Greet the employee upon arrival

  • Provide tour ¨ Introduce co-workers, support staff

  • Confirm access to email, phone, shared networks, etc.

  • Assign first task/review initial assignments

  • Review schedule for the first week

  • Confirm training dates/locations

While there’s no single best way to welcome and onboard new hires, this list will help you create an employee orientation program that works best for your company and your new employees.
