Overview

Maryland licenses assisted living programs through the Office of Health Care Quality under COMAR 10.07.14. Every staff member needs orientation plus initial and annual training in core safety topics. Staff who give personal care also need dementia and behavioral health training within their first 120 days, then a refresher every year. Assisted living managers must finish an 80-hour Department-approved course and keep up 20 hours of approved continuing education every two years.

Training Requirements

Initial Training Topics

  • Fire and life safety, including fire extinguishers
  • Infection control and hand hygiene
  • Basic food safety
  • Emergency disaster plans
  • Basic first aid
  • Cognitive impairment, mental illness and behavioral health (communication, behavioral intervention, de-escalation, meaningful activities, family interaction, end-of-life care, staff stress)
  • Resident rights, assessment process and service plans

Renewal Process

Core safety topics and dementia/behavioral health training repeat every year. First aid recertification is every 2 years. Managers renew through 20 hours of approved CE every 2 years. Enough staff must hold CPR training (with a hands-on component) so a trained person is available 24 hours a day.
