When Yadira Melo's sister first suggested she try working as a Direct Support Professional, Yadira hesitated. Coming from a career in banking, the transition seemed overwhelming. She doubted whether she had what it took to succeed in a field so different from anything she'd known. But over a year and a half later, Yadira has become one of BayCSS's most valued team members, proving that sometimes the best career moves are the ones that initially seem most challenging.

Her journey from uncertain newcomer to confident professional exemplifies what makes the DSP field so rewarding, and her dedication to the individuals she supports has made a real difference at BayCSS's Annapolis, Maryland location.

From Banking to Direct Support: A Journey of Growth

Yadira's path into direct support work began with encouragement from someone who knew firsthand how meaningful the career could be. "My sister actually convinced me to give it a try," Yadira explains. "She always felt good about the career, working with people with disabilities. She felt it just opens up your mind to a different view." Despite her sister's enthusiasm, Yadira approached her first days with natural apprehension.

The transition from the structured environment of banking to the dynamic world of disability services wasn't seamless. Yadira openly acknowledges the challenges she faced early on. "At first, when I first started coming from banking to a DSP, it was a totally different career," she recalls. "From the beginning I was kind of nervous, didn't really think I would be a good fit for this job, so I doubted myself multiple times."

But doubt didn't stop her from showing up and learning. What Yadira discovered was that working through challenges, rather than avoiding them, revealed capabilities she didn't know she had. "Throughout the challenges I've gotten with different people, I've learned to work with them," she says. "I thought I couldn't do it, but I realized I could. This is something I want to keep on growing in."

Turning a Challenging Moment Into a Learning Experience

Every DSP can point to a moment that tested their resolve, and for Yadira, that moment came when working with a client whose behavior escalated unexpectedly. Despite having read the individual's care plan and understanding their disabilities, the real-world situation felt different. "I was like, I know how to work it, but I don't know how I'm going to work it without him noticing I'm panicking," Yadira remembers. "I thought about it and was like, is this really something I want to keep doing?"

What happened next showcases both Yadira's wisdom in seeking support and the strength of BayCSS's team culture. She called her supervisor, Tierra Henry, who talked her through the situation step by step. "She explained to me, she walked me through what to do," Yadira says. "Then I'm like, okay, I got this. So I hung up and put that to work and it worked. That's when I realized I can do this."

This experience didn't just resolve a difficult moment; it transformed Yadira's entire approach to her work. She learned that asking for guidance isn't a sign of weakness but rather a professional strength. More importantly, she proved to herself that she could handle challenges she once thought were beyond her abilities.

Building Meaningful Connections Every Day

Ask Yadira what she loves most about her job, and her answer is immediate: working with the clients. At BayCSS's day program, she supports the same group of individuals daily, though she works with different people each day to provide varied experiences and build relationships across the entire center. This approach has allowed her to develop her own method for connecting with those she supports.

"I introduce myself to them as they come in or if they're new to the program or I'm new to them," Yadira explains. "We have small conversations from the beginning, and once I get to work with them, they already know a little bit about me." From there, she focuses on truly getting to know each person's preferences and personality. "I try to talk to them, ask them about their day, ask them about activities, see what they like, what they don't like."

This patient, genuine approach to relationship-building has paid off. "Through that, I've noticed some clients build a relationship with me by saying, 'Oh, I want to work with her,' or 'I get along with her,'" Yadira shares. "I feel like that's working with me." The individuals she supports aren't just asking to work with her randomly. They're responding to her authenticity, patience, and the real care she brings to each interaction.

The Power of Personality and Patience

When asked what makes a great DSP, Yadira doesn't hesitate: "I would say personality, because if you have a good personality, that's when clients get along with you or they like working with you. But if you have a bad personality, I would say that sometimes that would trigger behaviors or they're like, 'Oh, I don't want to work with them,' and that's where issues come."

This insight reflects a deep understanding that disability support isn't just about following procedures or completing tasks. It's about how you show up as a person every single day. Yadira's naturally warm, patient demeanor has become one of her greatest professional assets, but she also credits her work with helping her develop even further. "It made me more patient," she says, noting that this growth has extended beyond work. "So I have two kids, a nine-year-old and a five-year-old. I've already been patient, but throughout working with this company and with the clients, I've actually learned how to become more patient or work throughout anger issues. It's helped me be more patient in my personal life and be more understanding, especially with my kids."

Always Willing to Take on New Challenges

Tierra Henry, Yadira's supervisor at BayCSS, sees qualities in her that make her stand out among the entire team. "She is always willing to try new things," Tierra explains. "I can throw a challenging client or obstacle in front of her and she's always willing to give it a go. She might give me like, 'Oh, I don't know,' but 'I'll try.' And when she feels like, 'Oh, I don't know,' I'll just coach her through it and she will go through it and she always does a wonderful job."

Tierra also highlights Yadira's role beyond direct client support. "She is like my main go-to person when it comes to coordinating with people at organizations for our volunteer opportunities," Tierra says, referencing Yadira's involvement with programs like Meals on Wheels. "She's willing to talk, communicate. She's like my middle person. They give me the inside out, what's going on in the field, what clients are doing, what's going on. She's my right hand."

This trust speaks volumes. In just a year and a half, Yadira has become someone her supervisor relies on not just to support individuals with disabilities, but to help coordinate broader program initiatives and serve as a communication bridge between staff and leadership.

Understanding the Work That Changes Perspectives

One aspect of DSP work that Yadira wishes more people understood is the breadth and diversity of disabilities that professionals in this field encounter. "From personally, from family and friends around me that know what job I do, what I noticed at the beginning is they didn't understand what it meant, working with people with disabilities," she reflects. "For them, they felt like people with disability just meant they only had one disability, like they just thought about one thing."

Through conversations about her daily work, Yadira has become an educator in her personal life as well. "Throughout the time that I've worked, I would tell them about my day and I would say, 'Oh, I work with this client and this and this and that,' and they would be like, 'Oh, that's a disability?' And I'm like, yes. So then they've learned through me that every client is different and there are multiple disabilities out there, not just one."

Words of Wisdom for Future DSPs

For anyone considering a career as a Direct Support Professional, Yadira offers advice born from her own experience of doubt and growth. "I would say just, if you have a feeling for it, just go ahead and do it and don't doubt yourself, because that's what I did at first," she says. "I would doubt myself a lot. I got really scared, would say, you know, I don't think I'll last here."

Her guidance continues with a reminder about the support available in the field: "If you need any help, just talk to your supervisors, because what they say from the beginning, that's what they're for, to help you throughout the challenges. And at first I would think, no, they won't help me, but they do. They do. So I would say just try it out and you never know. That's the career for you and that's something you would actually love."

Still Learning, Still Growing

Despite her success and recognition, Yadira maintains a learner's mindset. "I'm learning a lot daily," she says. "I can't say I learned everything because every day you learn something new. Every person is different. You learn about them as you work with them. So I'm still learning and hopefully I keep on learning throughout the time."

This humility combined with confidence defines Yadira's approach to her work. She knows she has capabilities she once doubted, yet she remains open to new lessons and experiences. She understands that great DSP work isn't about knowing everything from day one. It's about showing up with patience, personality, and a willingness to learn from both the individuals you support and the colleagues who support you.
