A registered behavior technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to help deliver applied behavior analysis (ABA) services. RBTs work directly with clients, always under the close supervision of a qualified RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator. The requirements to earn the credential changed on January 1, 2026, with a new 40-hour training outline, a new exam outline and a new recertification cycle.
This guide walks through what an RBT does, how the role differs from a "behavior technician" job title, each step to certification under the 2026 rules, how the exam is built and what it takes to keep the credential. If you're still deciding whether the field is right for you, our earlier post on why the RBT credential can be a next career step covers that side.
What an RBT does
The BACB describes the RBT as a paraprofessional certification in behavior analysis. RBTs assist in delivering behavior-analytic services and practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator, who is responsible for their work.
Day to day, the RBT Handbook says an RBT's activities are set by their supervisors and may include:
- Conducting preference assessments.
- Implementing discrete-trial teaching procedures.
- Collecting data and generating session notes.
The 40-hour training outline gives a fuller picture of the job. Its largest section, at 20 hours, covers behavior-change interventions. Other sections cover preparing for sessions, collecting and graphing data, helping with behavior assessments, documentation and reporting, and ethics and professionalism.
Behavior technician vs. RBT
"Behavior technician" is a job title. "Registered Behavior Technician" is a credential. The RBT Handbook notes that RBTs may perform activities behavior technicians typically perform, so the day-to-day work can look similar. The difference is that only a person who has met the BACB's requirements can use the RBT title, and RBTs must meet the BACB's supervision, ethics and recertification requirements to keep it. If you're comparing job postings, check whether the role requires certification at hire or within a set time after hire.
How to become an RBT: the 2026 steps
The RBT Handbook lays out the path in four stages: meet the eligibility requirements, apply, pass the exam and maintain the credential.
Step 1: Meet the basic eligibility requirements
You must:
- Be at least 18 years old when you submit your application.
- Have at least a high school-level education.
- Pass a criminal background check no more than 180 days before paying for your application.
- Pass an abuse registry check no more than 180 days before paying for your application. If your state doesn't have an abuse registry, or the information isn't available to organizations like yours, the attestation form lets you mark it "Unavailable."
Step 2: Complete the 40-hour training
Applicants on or after January 1, 2026, must complete a training that meets the BACB's 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline. The rules are specific:
- Duration: At least 40 hours, completed in no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days. Both the start and end dates count.
- Content: Seven sections with minimum hours that total 38. The remaining 2 hours can go to any section.
- Format: In person, online or both. It must include behavioral skills training methods, such as modeling, role-play with feedback, quizzes or instructor-led discussion. Assigned readings don't count toward the hours.
- Trainer: The training must be designed and overseen by a BCaBA, BCBA or BCBA-D who has completed the 8-hour supervision training. That person is the Responsible Trainer. They can delegate some or all of the teaching to Assistant Trainers who hold an RBT certification or higher.
- Independence: The training provider may not be related to, subordinate to or employed by the applicant.
The minimum hours by section:
| Section | Minimum hours |
|---|---|
| A. Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis | 2 |
| B. Preparing for Service Delivery | 1 |
| C. Data Collection and Graphing | 3 |
| D. Assisting with Behavior Assessments | 3 |
| E. Behavior-Change Interventions | 20 |
| F. Service Delivery Documentation and Reporting | 3 |
| G. Ethics and Professionalism | 5 |
The BACB doesn't provide 40-hour training, certificates or training program recommendations. The handbook advises applicants to check with their instructor that a course was designed to meet the 2026 requirements. Older trainings may be eligible only if they meet all current requirements.
Step 3: Pass the Initial Competency Assessment
After the 40-hour training, and no more than 90 days before you apply, you must show that you can perform the tasks on the RBT Initial Competency Assessment. The assessor uses the BACB's assessment packet, and like the trainer, may not be related to, subordinate to or employed by you.
Step 4: Apply
You apply through your BACB portal account. The application includes your 40-hour training certificate and your completed Initial Competency Assessment. An Attesting Certificant must confirm your education and your background and abuse registry checks. Applications stay active for 90 days, so if you don't meet every requirement in that window, you'll need to start a new application.
Step 5: Pass the RBT exam
Once your application is approved, you schedule the exam with Pearson VUE. You have one year from the approval date to sit for it.
What's on the RBT exam
The exam is based on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). It has 85 multiple-choice questions, 75 of which are scored, and you have 90 minutes. Each question has four possible answers and one correct answer. Your result is based on your overall score, not your score in each area.
| Content area | Scored questions | Share of exam |
|---|---|---|
| A. Data Collection and Graphing | 13 | 17% |
| B. Behavior Assessment | 8 | 11% |
| C. Behavior Acquisition | 19 | 25% |
| D. Behavior Reduction | 14 | 19% |
| E. Documentation and Reporting | 10 | 13% |
| F. Ethics | 11 | 15% |
If you don't pass, you can retake the exam up to 8 total attempts in the 12 months after your application is approved, waiting at least 7 days between attempts.
Studying for the exam
The handbook points candidates to two study sources: the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) and the materials from their 40-hour training and competency assessment. A few practical steps follow from that:
- Study by weight. Behavior acquisition and behavior reduction together make up 44% of the scored questions, and data collection and graphing adds another 17%.
- Go back to your training materials. The exam outline and the 40-hour outline cover the same ground, so your course notes and quizzes are your best review.
- Read the RBT Ethics Code (2.0). Ethics is 15% of the exam, and the code applies to everything you'll do after you pass.
- Practice with the test format. Pearson VUE offers a demo test and an online tour of its test centers.
Keeping the credential: supervision and recertification
Passing the exam is the start, not the end. The RBT Handbook sets these ongoing requirements:
- Supervision: At least 5% of the hours you spend providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month. That includes at least two face-to-face, real-time contacts a month, and your supervisor must observe you providing services in at least one of them. At least one contact must be individual.
- Ethics: You must follow the RBT Ethics Code (2.0) and the BACB's self-reporting requirements.
- Recertification: RBTs move to a two-year recertification cycle once they recertify on or after January 1, 2026. Each cycle requires a Recertification Competency Assessment, completed no more than 45 days before you recertify, and a recertification application.
- Professional development: 12 hours of professional development units (PDUs) in each two-year cycle. Supervision and professional development are separate, and one event can't count toward both.
A next step for direct support professionals
For direct support professionals in I/DD services, the RBT credential adds structured skills in data collection, behavior assessment support and documentation to the work they already do. Check with your employer and your state's rules on which services require the credential.
